EXAM DAY: TUESDAY

PAPER: GEOGRAPHY PRACTICAL

5a)
Mass wasting refers to the downslope of rocks, regolith and soil under the force gravity .

5b) four factors are
i) gravity or nature of slope. Gravity is the main cause of mass wasting. Gravity is the force which pull materials downslope. On the steep slopes loose and disturbed particles of rocks respond by moving downward .  uplands with steep gredient enhance rapid mass movement while slow movement occurs in gentle sloping areas.
ii)the nature of materials. Large scale and rapid mass wasting is caused by saturated loose and bulky rock materials while dry less bulky and small rock particles produce small scale and slow mass wasting  .
iii) activities of man. Human activities which include mining , movement of heavy duty truck , construction , etc affect the rate and character of mass wasting.
iv) crustal instability. Mass wasting is more common in areas of instability caused by earthquakes , trains , heavy duty trucks  set poorly consolidated rock moving downward. Earthquakes upset the balance and trigger sudden movement.

5c)
I. Loss of life
ii. Destruction of land
iii. Destruction of communication lines
Iv. Destruction of settlement

6a)Igneous rock are rocks which are formed from cooling and solidification of hot motten magma and lava.

6b)
I. They are crystallined
ii. They are non- stratified
iii. They  have no bedding plane
Iv. They are non fossilized
V. They are hard as compare to sedimentary rock.
Vi. They are usually hard and impervious

6c)
importance of rocks to mankind are
I). Source of soil. Rocks serve as source of soil for farming
Ii). Source of food. Rock salt serves as an important source of food
Iii). Source of water . man get water from percol water that is retained by non permeable rocks called aquifer
I've. Source of fertilizer. Potash, phosphate are raw materials for production of fertilizer
V. Industrial raw materials. Example limestone serves as raw material to cement factories
7a)
i)Sahara (North Africa)
ii)Great australian desert(Australia)
iii)High rate of evaporation
iv)Relative humidity is very low

7c) i)Possession of long roots to search for water in
the soil
ii)Presence of few or no leaves at all to prevent
transpiration
iii)Possession of thick succulent stems
iv)Some shed their leaves during drought
8a)
Atmospheric resources are those are those elements such as wind, water, sunlight, and gases, which are of benefit to man , animals, and plants

8b)
Atmospheric gases ( nitrogen, oxygen, co2, water vapour , ozone layer
(i) wind
(ii) rainfall
(iii) solar energy

8c)
i)oxygen supports animals life
ii) used by plants and animals for respiration
iii) Co2 required by plants for photosynthesis
iv): ozone layer acts as a blanket to the earth
v) rain provides water for human consumption and agriculture
